Livin' In The 90s Month: Day Four

movies:

• grosse pointe blank (1997) the dude (benny urquidez) who plays the assassin stalking john cusack is so suitably creepy looking. he's a famous kickboxer in real life & trained cusack, who took an interest in the sport after playing a kickboxer in say anything (is there anything that man can't do?! john cusack #1 star of my heart xx!!oo).

tv shows:

• sliders (1995-2000) season one, eps 4-10. the first two seasons had some cool recurring characters that they'd run into on every world they visited, doing the same job. my favourites are the cab driver & the hotel manager (played by will sasso, who i loved on MAD TV & other bits and pieces).

• frasier (1993-2004) season one, eps 2-3. gah, the early days of niles' infatuation with daphne are the sweetest!
• seinfeld (1989-1998) season one, ep 2. awkward first season, but it's only 5 episodes long & worth a look to see what changes were made (way good move recasting jerry's dad).

food & drink:

• awful coffee in a new mug given to me by a patient. his exact words as he handed it to me were "think of pussy as you drink from it". goddamn.

• le snak! le snak is so damn 90s. little biscuit/dip combos in general, really. 

• weis mango & cream bar.

• leftover sundried tomato pasta.

• minties & fantales.

• gin & tonic x a few...

• raspberry sunnyboy.

• mountain dew & babybel.

musings/other:

even the bus is supporting my 90s-ness! '96 met prices stuck in one of those notice slot thingys.

and lastly, a note about a show i loved, but am unable to get my hands on, bar a few youtube clips. the extraordinary (1993-96) was a very popular show hosted by warwick moss, presenting allegedly true stories of the paranormal. the best part of the show was not the stories themselves, but moss' introductions & the opening & closing credits.

full frontal did a pretty good goof on it, which i can't find :(

• con air (1997)           OH.

it has all that, nic cage's accent AND john cusack! outstanding!

tv shows:

• early edition (1996-2000) season one, ep 5. more notable guest stars today:

 fyvush finkel a.k.a. the grumpy arse teacher from boston public (he's also known for picket fences, which i've never paid much attention to, but might sometime this month).

 max wright a.k.a. norm's boss mr denby in the norm show & he was also the dad in ALF!

• sliders (1995-2000) season one, eps 1-3. one of my favourite shows ever, despite it's tragic, heartbreaking, prolonged death. something i never realised until today is that the rather loathsome john landis served as executive producer.
• the simpsons (1989-present) season one, ep 4. the one where they go to the company picnic at burns' mansion. the one thing that has always stuck with me from this episode is the jelly dessert marge makes to take along (probably a hint that it's not a very good episode...).

• frasier (1993-2004) season one, ep 1. frasier is a good example of a show that was very strong & in it's groove right from the first episode, no awkward first season (probably helped by the fact that it's a spin-off). 
• home improvement (1991-99) season one, eps 1-3.

food & drink:

• dunkaroos & awful coffee.

• weis mango & cream bar. i can't find the fruito flavour, the best flavour, anywhere! what's going on?!

• kiwi strawberry snapple, soft boiled eggs, toast fingers.

• fantales. i can't read the wrappers :(

• raspberry sunnyboy. these are never as good as they tasted as a kid. the rock hard chunks of flavourless ice you get through parts of it are the worst.

• sundried tomato pasta w/ stacks of parmesan.

• MORE SNAPPLE.

• hot cross bun.

musings/other:

my mother made all my party dresses until i was about 9 ('92). i loved each & every one of them & would want to wear them everywhere. i remember begging my brother to take me to the city with his friends while i was wearing this once. he was rightly mortified.

movies:

• the faculty (1998) the makers of this film clearly had a thing for the terminator movies. there's a 'connor' family, inc. 'john connor', a 'professor furlong', and robert patrick plays one of the main bad guys. best cast, including another 90s mega babe, clea duvall.

 

 tv shows:

• early edition (1996-2000) season one, eps 1-4. super duper underrated clever little show. one of my favourite things about watching shows from the 80s & 90s is playing 'hey, it's that guy/chick from blah blah!'. episode 3 gave me two of those moments:

cynthia nixon (sex & the city) playing a woman pregnant with twins, stuck in an elevator with chuck.

a pre-ally mcbeal jane krakowski, playing a horny doctor.

music:

• pulp fiction soundtrack (1994) wiki says "many of the songs on the soundtrack were suggested to tarantino by musician boyd rice through their mutual friend allison anders". this i never knew, but makes perfect sense.

food & drink:

• tea & dunkaroos! i had no idea these still existed!

• babybel.

• so many minties...

• things i didn't realise before today: i hate yogo. foul, foul sludge. choc chips were good, but.

• spring onion pancake.

• chinese broccoli & veggie dumplings (not pictured).

• popped into a korean supermarket while in box hill for dinner & found these wedged under a table!!! my old favourite flavour, no less! i haven't had snapple since the 90s, when snapple, oasis & fruitopia were all the rage in australia. and only $3 a pop!

musings/other:

the real reason minties exist is so you can do this with the wrappers.

movies:

• a night at the roxbury (1998) this totally wouldn't exist if haddaway hadn't been such a boss & come up with 'what is love?'. no other song would've worked as well. cool appearances by loni anderson, jennifer coolidge (playing that one character she plays in everything), and mega 90s babe, elisa donovan (clueless, sabrina the teenage witch)

• the net (1995) wow. sandra bullock has always looked approximately 42 years old, hasn't she? the main joy in this movie is laughing at the technology used, though i seem to remember it already seeming really dated when it first came out.

• sour grapes (1998) written & directed by larry david, it plays like a long episode of curb your enthusiasm meshed with seinfeld (as you'd expect).

tv shows:

• the simpsons (1989-present) season 1, eps 1-3 + season 9, eps 1-2. the first ep of season 9, the city of new york vs. homer simpson, is actually the funniest thing to ever air on television. goddamn. 

• the fresh prince of bel-air (1990-96) according to wiki, will smith had almost mc hammered himself into bankruptcy when approached by NBC to make this show. what if they'd approached mc hammer instead? what if mc hammer currently had the same kind of profile will smith enjoys, and will smith was that bankrupt loser everyone jokes about? what a crazy, mixed-up world that would be! 

music:

• ice-t's o.g. original gangster (1991) 

  reading:

• little girl lost by drew barrymore (1990)

gaming:

• super marios bros. 3 on snes (not released outside of japan until the 90s), clocked worlds 1 + 2.

food & drink:

• soft boiled eggs, toast fingers, tea.
  

• coffee, hot cross bun (i am among those that welcome the early appearance of hot x buns in supermarkets, further opportunities for deliciousness are always welcome!)

• weis mango & cream bar.

• mountain dew & babybel.

• burger rings, i am so sorry that i forgot you existed for most of the 2000s.

• vienetta! these used to come as the dessert option in pizza hut meal deals in the 90s, until magnums took over.

• gin & tonic, in kyle's mcdonald's batman forever mug.

• potato gems w/ sour cream, nandos hot sauce & sweet baby ray's honey bbq.

musings/other:

i will continue to humiliate myself (and loved ones) throughout the month by posting my own glorious moments of 90s fashion. i don't even know what to call what i'm wearing, but the real star of this photo is my brother's mint snoop-inspired get-up. bless.

hey blog. remember that whole livin' in the 80s thing i did last year? well, i had such an excellent time that i'm doing it again, 90s style. same rules apply (except i get to play video games this year, yeah!). ok, so the whole thing is just an excuse to listen to N-Trance, WHATEVER. sleepy 1991 me hopes you (& i) enjoy.
