Livin' in the 80s Month: Day Thirty One

movies:
  • pee-wee's big adventure (1985) when i watch a movie that i love as much as this one, i find it a bit hard to contain my joy & end up bouncing on the couch screaming & annoying whoever might be so unfortunate as to be watching it with me. but really, i don't know why everyone doesn't have such a physical reaction while watching peewee, it really is just that good. i love the opening scene where pee-wee gets up & dressed & has his brekkie & feeds the dog, with the help of a lot of machinery. pee-wee's house is my ultimate dream. kyle noted when we were watching back to the future the other day that elaborate pet feeding contraptions were really big in 80s movies. pee-wee, back to the future, honey i shrunk the kids. yeah. i always forget that this was co-written by phil hartman & he cameos as a reporter at the end. i really wish his wife hadn't gone nuts & killed him, what a talent. hey courtney, this is just for you...(i'm a horrible friend).

  • batman (1989) we were going to watch beetlejuice, but lauren said it scared her! oh lauren. so we popped on batman instead. i'm sure it's great, i could tell that it's great, but really, i was very distracted by the fact that i'd just watched pee-wee. it was all i could think about & i just wanted to put pee-wee on again. HOW GOOD IS PEE-WEE?! pee-wee.

Livin' in the 80s Month: Day Thirty

movies:
  • the wizard (1989) the wonder years is a show i wanted to watch this month, but i've been trying to find a good copy of it for about 8 years with no success (it hasn't been released on dvd yet due to licensing issues with the music), so i'll keep waiting. it's star, fred savage, stars in this very of-it's-time movie about three kids travelling cross country to compete in a video game championship. it's pretty much a very long commercial for nintendo & super mario bros 3, but I DON'T GIVE A SHEEEEEEIT. the scene where the badass kid lucas glorifies the power glove has since become pretty notorious.
  • better off dead (1985) strange, strange john cusack movie that i'd not seen before. kyle realised as we were watching that it's one of the movies parodied in that skiing episode of south park. i was having a look at what other movies the director, savage steve holland, had done since & he only did a couple more before moving on to animation & kids tv. apparently it's all john cusack's fault. cusack walked out of a screening of better off dead & yelled at holland that it "was the worst thing i have ever seen. i will never trust you as a director ever again, so don't speak to me". holland said that john's words made him not care about movies anymore. whoa!

tv shows:
  • full house (1987-95) season two, eps 16-17. episode 16 sees full house doing what it does best, making people puke with it's nauseating focus on michelle being cute. michelle, age 2, suffers a broken heart when her equally nauseating boyfriend howie goes back home to nebraska. fark.
