Livin' In The 90s Month: Cancelled.

hello blog.
my darling mumsy had a stroke last night & will be in hospital for a bit, so i am going to have to cancel the rest of my 90s month (hospitals are sooooooooooo not 90s).
i will be giving it another shot in january 2014, a year i dearly hope will be a little less drama-filled, as 2013 ain't going so well!
thanks to all who have taken an interest xoxoxo

Livin' In The 90s Month: Day Eleven

movies:
  • cube (1997) one of those low budget movies that has a good enough central idea, so people look past the crappy acting & occasional cheesy line. i've been meaning to watch one of the writer/director's other movies, nothing, for some time (as in, every six months i think "hey, i should watch that interesting sounding movie called nothing, but never do).
tv shows:
  • sliders (1995-2000) season three, eps 7-8. UGHHHHHHHH, ep 8 is one of my least favourite episodes, about a TALKING BALL OF FIRE that gets  trapped in another world with the sliders. get farrrrrrrrrked.
  • seinfeld (1989-1998) season two, eps 11-12 + season three, ep 1. i just found out that jason alexander's real name is jay scott greenspan & as a result am having an existential crisis. jay. JAY. J-A-Y. what's real anymore? am i real? am i here? are you here? this changes everything.
  • caroline in the city (1995-99) season one, ep 7. the dude who directed this episode, tom cherones, directed nearly every episode of seinfeld through seasons 1-5. despite that, it's one of the shitter episodes so far...
  • ellen (1994-98) season one, eps 1-2. yayayay! it's ellen! awkward first episode hair & all. i loved the crap out of this show back in the day, right to the end. and hey look, it's a wee little giovanni ribisi in the pilot ep.
food & drink:
  • dunkaroos & awful coffee.
  • le snak & tomato cup a soup.
  • mumsy bought me twisties to take to the pool, weeee!
  • billabongs are way 90s.
  • coffee made with hazelnut coffee mate (i had no idea you could still get that crap here) and whitman's truffles.
  • again, mentos, way 90s.

  • kiwi strawberry snapple in frosty mug.
  • g & t.
musings/other:

in which i continue to humiliate myself. seems mum decided to dress me in a moo-moo for this one. some excellent fashion on display here. i particularly like the girl in the middle with the high waisted jean shorts & bart t-shirt. note the cross i carved in jimmy's face in the front row, i was angry at him because he purposefully tripped me up, resulting in my earring getting lodged deep in my earlobe. i had to have surgery to get it out, because i was at risk of metal poisoning & wouldn't let anyone near me to yank it out. THANKS JIMMY...not.

Livin' In The 90s Month: Day Ten

 movies:
  • coneheads (1993) yeah, so, this is weak and unfunny. the filmmakers seemingly try to distract you from this fact with an avalanche of cameos (inc. pretty much every SNL person ever, drew carey, the cast of seinfeld, sinbad, ellen & tom arnold), so that you'll spend your time going "hey, it's that guy" instead of "oh, this is awful".
tv shows:
  • sliders (1995-2000) season three, eps 5-6. the actor playing the bad guy in the episode 'desert storm' died during filming & another guy was brought in to finish his scenes, so you do a fair bit of double taking while watching it.
  • caroline in the city (1995-99) season one, ep 6. bizarre amount of cross promotion happens in this series. matthew perry guest stars briefly as chandler bing for no good reason, as well as jonathan silverman (a.k.a. the dude from weekend at bernie's) playing the character from his shitty sitcom the single guy
  • full frontal (1993-97) season three, eps 1-2. golden age of full frontal, feat. eric bana, kitty flanagan & micallef! total schoolyard must-see back in the day.
reading:
food & drink:
  • awful coffee.
  • excellent coffee.
  •  le snak. LERRRRH SNARK.
  • sprite and bento while taking my little brother out for the day.
  • diet dr pepper.
  • leftover pizza (on the best plate in the world) and mineral water.
musings/other:
1994. warrandyte primary school, grade six. compulsory school sports, i was forced to be on the softball and teeball teams (totally made up sports, if you ask me). i was by far the worst player on the team & everyone tried to be polite about it, but failed. i was also the school rebel/outcast, as evidenced by my TOTALLY REBELLIOUS choice of BLACK footwear, amongst a sea of (compulsory) WHITE. also, check my coach's double denim, 'NUFF SAID.

Livin' In The 90s Month: Day Nine

movies:
  • the firm (1993) if someone made an evil lawyers movie today, you could be all like "hey film making dude, the 1990s called, they want their evil lawyers movie back". yeah. my main complaint about this movie (apart from tom cruise being gross & creepy during sexytime scenes) is that there was only a tiny amount of gary busey & only a moderate amount of holly hunter.
i never thought i was a holly hunter person, but here i am, being one.

tv shows:
  • dinosaurs (1991-94) season one, ep 1. oh. damn. i was really looking forward to watching this show, having loved it so much when it aired, but it's kind of...not very good. or maybe it's just because it's the first episode. or maybe i loved it when i was a kid, because i was a kid & now i'm not, so i don't. except that i usually still love stuff i loved as a kid...i don't know. perhaps i'll watch another episode & see. did this have a tie-in with pizza hut? or am i confusing the land before time puppet tie-in with this? oh man, i wish i still had those land before time puppets.
  • caroline in the city (1995-99) season one, ep 5. goddamn, no one ever locks their doors in sitcoms, do they? anyone can just walk right in, whenever they like. TOTALLY UNNERVING.
  • sliders (1995-2000) season three, eps 1-4. corey feldman guest stars in ep 3 & it made my heart all happy. as in, seeing him in anything post-80s makes me all heart happy, like, 'yay, feldman employment'. also, quinn's hair is looking amazing at the moment.
food & drink:
  • awful coffee & dunkaroos.
  • holy shit, ok ok ok, do this: spread le snak cheese on cracker, dip in tomato cup-a-soup, eat that shit. dee-farkin-licious.
  • kit kat. i didn't realise that kit kat chunky came out in the 90s until later in the night, when i was watching a bunch of 1997 ads. totally would've got one of those instead.
  • diet dr pepper + watermelon & strawberries.
  • pizzaaaaaaa. pizza is rather 90s. i think it's a ninja turtle thing.
  • vienetta.
musings/other:
1996. that smashing pumpkins 'zero' t-shirt was a pretty hot item at the time. i wish i'd kept every one of those bloody army disposal store backpacks i had over my teenage years. love to know what was written all over them. actually, it's probably just a lot of song lyrics & "______ is a dick, hur hur" & "i love ________".

Livin' In The 90s Month: Day Eight

movies:
  • dead man on campus (1998) kyle hates this movie for no good reason, so i had to wait 'til he wasn't home to watch it, WHATEVER KYLE. MTV produced a number of good films in the 90s, including this one. co-written by mike white, personal hero/best amazing race contestant. jason segel & linda cardellini have a small role as a couple in this & a year later, played a couple in freaks & geeks (which, not so coincidentally, mike white also worked on). anyway, it's dark & funny & stars zack morris, so SHUT UP KYLE, SHUT UP.
  • the devil's advocate (1997) whoa. i had no idea that this movie was this awesome. no one ever talks about this movie, is it forgotten? underrated? i remember it getting shit reviews when it came out. the chick who plays the medical examiner on law & order SVU gets a bit naked in this, so, uh...that was weird.
tv shows:
  • beverly hills, 90210 (1990-2000) season five, ep 15. JUST FUCK OFF ALREADY WON'T YOU ANDREA, I REALLY, REALLY STRONGLY DISLIKE YOU. as if brandon & crew would really be friends with you. i always found it easier to pretend all the 30 year old actors were teenagers than that. ugh. 15 more episodes & she's gone, it's ok.
 no, no, no.
  • home improvement (1991-99) season one, eps 4-6. i looked up my big pre-teen crush, JTT (a.k.a. jonathan taylor thomas), expecting him to go the way of most teen idols & look awful these days, but no, he's come off ok.
  • caroline in the city (1995-99) season one, eps 3-4. still struggling to figure out why i like this show. maybe it's the fact that it stars marty mcfly's mum?
food & drink:

  • second coffee making attempt went much better. plus whitman's chocolate truffle.
  • baked egg & camembert & sake.
  • diet dr pepper + watermelon & strawberries.
  • hot & sour soup, from my vegetarian chinese cookbook (1995).
musings/other:
for my (i think) 12th birthday, my mother made me a dolphin cake.
that's right, a motherfucking dolphin cake. 12 year old girls in the 90s were all about dolphins, but not all of them got a dolphin cake.
also part of the birthday spread were plenty of those AC soft drinks & chips you could get from kmart. oh & those choc chip biscuits also, oh man they were good.

Livin' In The 90s Month: Day Seven

movies:
  • conspiracy theory (1997) i'm not sure what compelled me to watch this movie, given it stars two of my least favourite actors. i was under the impression that it was all that and a bag of chips. it is, in fact, super, super ordinary & mel gibson's nervy guy schtick made me nauseous.
tv shows:
  • caroline in the city (1995-99) season one, eps 1-2. i tend to lump this in with shows like veronica's closet & suddenly susan. they all aired around the same time, they're all about high achieving, mostly single women living in big cities, and they're all totally dated, forgettable & very 'of their time'. for some reason, i can't stop watching. i think it's the haircuts. re: below, i totally thought that this was alicia silverstone guest starring, but no, it's christine taylor (a.k.a. ben stiller's wife. she starred as marcia in the brady bunch movie the same year this aired).
  • sliders (1995-2000) season two, eps 10-13. the kromaggs (who, among other factors, totally destroyed the show) appear for the first time in the episode 'invasion', but thankfully they now mostly stay away until the fourth season. HEY LOOK IT'S WILL SASSO.
  • beverly hills, 90210 (1990-2000) season five, eps 13-14. so, steve holds an illegal rave at an abandoned house, which ends up on fire. kelly & some random end up trapped & suffer burns. funnily enough, despite being in the same room, the random cops the brunt of the flames, while kelly's burns are mostly confined to her neck, her precious face free of damage. oh, television!

music:
food & drink:
  • dunkaroos.
  • le snak.
  • diet dr pepper + strawberry & watermelon.
  • i attempted to make my own coffee using our machine for the first time. it was...bitter. i shall improve.
  • baked egg & camembert.
  • don't push me, push a push pop!
  • vanilla ice cream w/ ice magic.
musings/other:

my greatest sadness right now is that hangin' with mr cooper is currently completely unavailable in any form, save for a few youtube clips :(
