MIFF 2012: Day Sixteen

Undefeated 11am @ Greater Union

Kyle's review based on the title alone: Jack Warner, who had his feet amputated (i.e. was de-feeted) after a car accident, has had prosthetic feet surgically attached to his legs, undoing his de-feetion. Now that he’s been undefeeted, despite the lengthy rehabilitation ahead of him, Jack feels undefeated by the accident. 2/5 defeetations.

According to IMDB: "A documentary on an underdog football team who look to reverse their fortunes with coach Bill Courtney."

What DeeDee thought: What the hell, Kyle? This totally deserved it's Oscar. Yeah, I cried, a lot. Something, something Mighty Ducks.

Barbara 1:30pm @ Greater Union

Kyle's review based on the title alone: A lonely scientist invents a robot to keep him company. He names this robot after his first and only girlfriend, Barbara. A funny and touching movie, reminded me of the movie Lars and The Real Girl (2007). 3/5 Robochanmans.

According to IMDB: "A doctor working in 1980s East Germany finds herself banished to a small country hospital."

What DeeDee thought: Another movie that was, for me, a good time-filler, but not much more than that. I guess it made me realise I don't know too much about the whole East Germany thing & maybe I'll rectify that? I guess?

Berberian Sound Studio 4pm @ Greater Union

Kyle's review based on the title alone: Oh you would like to know what goes on at the Berberian Sound Studio wouldn’t you? What dark depraved secrets lurk in rooms lit only by the light of a mixing board? Enter the Berberian Sound Studio and channel your four-track mind for a reel-to-reel good time. 4/5 Buried bass guitar tracks.

According to IMDB: "A sound engineer's work for an Italian horror studio becomes a terrifying case of life imitating art."

What DeeDee thought: I need to watch this again, because I was struck down with an unfortunate case of coffee-induced 'need to wees' during this. I usually sit on the aisle, but was about five seats in for this session. I got up once to wee about 20 mins in & needed to go again about 20 mins later, but the scowls I got the first time fumbling past those 4-5 people put me off going, so all my energy went into holding it, 4 year old style. Looks like I'd need to re-watch this regardless though, judging by what I did see. And yes, when I finally got to the loo, it was the greatest wee of my life.

Sound of My Voice 6:30pm @ the Forum

Kyle's review based on the title alone: A deaf person is fitted with a bionic ear and for the first time in their life hears not only the world around them, but also the sound of their voice. “This is the sound of my voice?? Why didn’t anyone tell me I sounded so stupid!?” 3/5 Marlees.

According to IMDB: "A journalist and his girlfriend get pulled in while they investigate a cult whose leader claims to be from the future."

What DeeDee thought: I'm gonna be a smartarse & say I predicted the ending from early on. Yeah, I'm that guy. Plot-holey, but otherwise very good.

Kyle's review based on the title alone: Yo yo yo yo yo yo. 5/5 refreshing beverages.

According to IMDB: "A documentary on rap music and its rise to global prominence."

What DeeDee thought: My family & I are lifelong Ice-T fans (my dad & brother have both met him, arseholes), so even if this was horrible (which it wasn't), I would probably be incapable of acknowledging this. It was Ice-Terrrrrific (groan groan groan).
